McGuckin Methods
International (MMI) offers research,
development, and
evaluation of patient safety resources for
healthcare professionals. Together,
let's reduce healthcare-associated
infections, their alarming cost to our
healthcare system and distressing impact on
patients and families.
Our focus areas
are hand hygiene monitoring and patient &
healthcare worker education.
Programs are supported by peer-reviewed research, accreditation
review, and proof of sustainability in any
healthcare setting.
Research, review, and sustained
implementation
We are a listed Patient Safety Organization
(PSO) with the Agency for Healthcare
Research and Quality (U.S. Dept. of Health
and Human Services). When you
implement MMI's hand hygiene program, you
are using methodology that is recognized as a
standard for healthcare quality data
analysis and confidentiality.
Measurement
and education programs are included in
four
different submissions in the Joint Commission's
(JC) Guideline for Hand Hygiene Adherence.
Our program has helped others overcome
the challenges! We offer validated components of a
multimodal plan for hand hygiene compliance
which hospitals have submitted for JC review
in the guide.
Our
patient empowerment commitment is
foundational to your success. MMI's
founder and president,
Dr. Maryanne McGuckin, is lead author of the patient
empowerment chapter for World Health
Organization's Guidelines on
Hand Hygiene in Health Care and member of
the task force for the First Global Patient
Safety Challenge: Clean Care is Safe Care.
Let us help you bring patient empowerment to
your healthcare facility!

Public Health Law Research |

McGuckin Methods International joins
Northwestern/U. Illinois Team to
investigate consumer awareness of
public HAI reporting.
|
Dr. Maryanne
McGuckin and McGuckin Methods International
have teamed up with Northwestern Law
Professor Bernie Black and University of
Illinois Law Professor David Hyman in a
$450,000 grant from the Public Health Law
Research program, funded by the Robert Wood
Johnson Foundation, to conduct research on
healthcare law and policy. The project will
explore whether mandatory public reporting
of infection rates causes hospitals to
actually reduce infections, whether it
causes hospitals to change the way they
report infection rates, or both; and the
ways in which hospital infection
preventionists and consumers use the
reports.
McGuckin will lead a research team to
investigate states’ efforts to educate and
promote healthcare associated infection
information as required by law. They will
survey state health authorities,
epidemiologists, and consumers, to assess
consumer awareness and engagement. They will
also investigate state efforts to measure
the effectiveness of their consumer
education efforts. As of 2011, there are 27
states that have mandated public reporting
of hospital infection rates, but there is no
measurement of whether the reports on
infection rates reach consumers or if
consumers use the information in making
healthcare related decisions.
McGuckin Methods International is a
healthcare advisory company that promotes
research and programs for patient
empowerment, hand hygiene compliance, and
consumer education. Dr. Maryanne McGuckin is
a pioneer in introducing patient empowerment
to healthcare settings, and is lead author
for the patient empowerment section of the
World Health Organization’s Guideline for
Hand Hygiene in Health Care (2009). Her
book, The Patient Survival Guide: 8 Simple
Solutions to Prevent Healthcare-Associated
Infections, will be published in spring
2012.
