Interpretation of Monthly Graphs

Monthly graphs are developed for our database that include several thousand in-patient/out-patient sites from Acute Care, Pediatrics, ER, ICU, NON-ICU, Rehabilitation-Behavioral units. The four graphs below are aggregate data from ICU and NON-ICU.
 
  The vertical axis in each graph displays hand/hygiene events per patient for units that are classified as either ICU or NON-ICU. The events are calculated for each patient bed-day.
 
  The horizontal axis in each graph displays the time period. The baseline is represented by time period “0” and each subsequent intervention period is numbered starting from “1”.
 
How Comparisons are Made
 
Comparative Benchmark
Graphs I and II display comparative benchmarks. These benchmarks are drawn at the average overall comparable units and at the 10th and 90th percentiles.
 
Benchmarking
The benchmarks are calculated using data from every hospital and unit in the program. The methodology used for the benchmarking is a linear regression model, and the percentile benchmarks are drawn from the same model, using prediction intervals calculated at the 10th and 90th percentiles.
